Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out. Proverbs 10:9 (ESV)
Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” 1 Corinthians 15:33 (ESV)
The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot. Proverbs 10:7 (ESV)
Definition of character: is the way a person thinks, feels, and behaves.
Definition of reputation: is the general belief or opinion that other people have about you.
Which would you rather have, an awesome reputation with those around you or a Godly, wholesome character? Of course, we all want to have a great reputation to follow us as we interact with others. However, having a great reputation is not necessarily an indication of having a morally upright and Godly character. As outlined by the definitions above, one could have a fantastic reputation amongst other people but, have a morally corrupt character.
All of us should desire to strive to have Godly characteristics as opposed to a popular reputation. In the current times in which we live, people who seek to have high integrity and Godly characters, are at times ridiculed for their principals and their values. When a person follows God and His precepts, as opposed to worldly ideals, they may be teased and given unflattering nicknames like Mr. or Ms. “holier than thou” or “holy roller.” These are just two out of many derogatory comments people will use.
In the current political, as well as the entertainment world, there are many people who may have popular reputations but, how do they behave with others? Do they show good values and a morally upstanding character? The way a person speaks and behaves, on a consistent basis, will usually tell you, their character. As God’s children, He expects us to move through life showing upstanding values and morals. In addition, He expects that if we do follow or associate with others, they too should seek to have Godly characteristics and values as well. Of course, no one is perfect, and we will slip up from time to time however, even in making mistakes, people with integrity will own up to their mistakes and look to make amends. People who are the opposite, seek self-gratification and will blame others for their mistakes. They will exhibit behaviors that show they do not care about anyone, only themselves.
Character or reputation? Pursue a Godly character and you will naturally have a great reputation.
