The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 2 Peter 3:9 (ESV)
But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 (ESV)
God truly does love and accept each and every one of us. There are many who feel that because of what they’ve done in their life, the sins and pain that they caused, will preclude God from loving and granting them salvation. This notion, however, is far from the truth. Just like a good parent, God loves us His children. For those who are parents, you know that your children at times will get you upset and angry with their behavior and their choices. But, that does not mean you do not love them and want the best for them. It’s the same with God but to an even greater degree! Humanly, we cannot comprehend the depth and breadth of His love for His children, His creation. It is stronger and more powerful than our human brain can even fathom.
So, despite our many flaws and sinful natures, God loves us and accepts us. However, does that mean God accepts all of our behaviors and lifestyle choices? The answer would be no. God does not accept all of our choices, especially if they are contrary to His Holy Word and how we should conduct ourselves as we go through life. God accepts us just like a loving parent however, He expects us to grow in truth, humility, love, and grace in everything we say and do. He expects us to get closer to Him, His precepts, and, to apply this knowledge to our everyday life. It does not mean He will not love us if we do not accept Him and His precepts. It just means that He desires for us to do so in order to spend eternity with Him.
So when we hear sermons and pastors say come as you are, these are true statements. However, God does not want anyone to continue making sinful-worldly choices and, living in a constant sinful lifestyle. God does not want any of us to stay in our sinful state instead, He is seeking us to be the best versions of ourselves. His desire is for us to be people who care about others and the welfare of all of His creation. He wants His children to be humble, loving, and full of grace and mercy towards others.
As we move forward in life, may we seek to know with absolute certainty that God accepts us and loves us. But also know He’s looking for us to grow and mature into the beautiful children He created us to be. He’s looking for us to be a blessing to those around us and to His world.
Blessings,
Angélique
