Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12 (ESV)
For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness. Psalm 18:28 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
“Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
In this world, there’s a lot of darkness in the form of hatred of others due to the way they look, their religious beliefs, their sexual orientation, their wealth or poverty, their social standing in society, etc. There is also envy and covetousness of another person’s objects or of the people who are connected to them. Beyond what is listed here, there are numerous other people, places, things, and situations, we know are also connected to evil or the darkness of this world.
Even though there is evil and darkness in this sinful world, God gave all of us a way of escape through His Holy Word, belief/faith in His Son Jesus Christ, and listening to His Holy Spirit, the Comforter. When we live every day according to God’s holy precepts, we are lighting a candle that will and can, dispel the darkness. There will be times we may not see the darkness dispel but trust and believe, our light of God’s truth and love is working.
I believe we all know that one lone candle or source of light, can fight back the darkness and, light a room or a dark area. Light always can dispel darkness. And the light we can choose to have by being connected to God will be able to shed light on our life’s path as well as the path of those around us. As it states in the first part of Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world…” and continuing in verse 16 it says this: “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in Heaven.”
May we seek to be the light this world so desperately needs. Let us light our candles of God’s promises of love, hope, peace, and kindness to all we meet. Every day as you live life, light your candle and keep it burning.
Blessings,
Angélique
