Your Focus: Deficits or Assets?

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: 1 Peter 4:10 (ESV)

Let’s face it. We all have deficits and, we all have assets. But oftentimes, as part of our human nature, we tend to focus on our deficits instead of the beautiful assets God has given us. We will sometimes fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others and what assets they have been given, furthering our doubts regarding the gifts God has bestowed upon us.

While listening to a recent podcast, there was a discussion about how people will focus on the deficits that have been told to them by society, and/or handed down to them from friends and at times even family. They went on to state people will highlight as well as dwell/focus on the negatives or deficits of their life, as opposed to focusing on and developing their positive attributes.

Now, we cannot deny the fact that certain groups of people have faced tremendous deficits due to their race/ethnicity, religion, gender, etc. There are numerous historical as well as current statistical facts that highlight these deficits. However, I would like to suggest that despite the deficits and setbacks we may face, may we begin to shift our attitude and energy, to focus on developing, as well as expanding our assets. In doing this, we will more than likely not only propel ourselves forward, but we will also help propel the lives of our loved ones.

As we seek to use our gifts/talents/assets for noble and righteous causes, we will gain the strength to overcome any deficit that man has tried to create to shut us down. We will be able to overcome any objections and/or obstacles, that may try and block us from moving forward.

We all have deficits but, we do not need them to hold us back or allow them to take over. May we learn/understand our deficits and seek to overcome them and/or use them to propel us to work on our assets.

Where is your focus? On your deficits? Or on your assets?

Blessings,

Angélique
